The story of Painville

Once upon a time, there was a little city called Painville. Everyone in Painville suffered terribly from all sorts of pain; toothache, migraines, and many others.
One day one of its inhabitants Mr.A came up with a miracle: something that could actually relieve pain. He called it a Painkiller!
Every one flocked to him wanting to have this wonder product. They offered him money, beyond his wildest dreams, as everybody wanted this one thing that only he could offer. He sold tons of his painkiller and became wealthy overnight.
A month later, another ruckus in Painville: Mr.B too had discovered another remedy against pain. A multitude flocked to him demanding his painkiller and he gave this in exchange for lots of money. Like Mr.A, he too grew rich overnight.

Within a period of 6 months a peculiar thing happened in Painville: 400 of her 2000 inhabitants all discovered their own painkillers. Yet these new ones did not grow rich even though their products were just as good.
The people of Painville had their pain problem under control now. A painkiller was no longer a miracle. It had become an ‘over-available’ commodity, to be found at every street corner.
The Painkiller guys faced a problem: There was so much of the stuff available that each person sold too little to make a living.

Then Mr.K got an idea: He started shouting from the street corners, telling folks how great his painkiller was. This got him attention and as folks turned to him, he started making money. The others got a wind of this and one by one started shouting at the people as well. This failed after a while for everyone because the people got accustomed to the shouting and stopped paying attention.

Then Mr.S brought in technology to increase his ubiquity. With it, he shouted harder than everyone and had images of himself everywhere. It cost him a fortune but it worked…. for a while, because everyone started doing the same. The people of Painville turned a deaf ear to all this.

They had become sick and tired of being yelled at, so tired of the same noise about the same old thing.

The painkiller guys were at a loss: How on earth in a world of over-availability can one begin to attract an audience who is no longer willing to listen?
